Hardware Design for Security (SS 2026)

Content

This course introduces students to the design of secure digital hardware systems, guiding them through the full development flow for ASICs and FPGAs. It combines foundational digital design concepts with hardware-software integration and embedded system security. The course covers the following topics:

  • Introduction to Digital Hardware Design
  • Introduction to Hardware Description Languages
  • Digital Design Flow for ASIC & FPGA
  • Testing, Validation and Verification of Hardware
  • Secure Processor Design
  • Root of Trust processors
  • Embedded Linux
  • Synchronous Design Principles
  • CMOS Logic and Low-Power Design
  • Embedded System Security
In the practicals, students work in pairs to build, verify, and test custom hardware extensions that implement selected security features.

Administrative Information

Students will be graded based on their performance in the practicals and the written exam.
Exam
There will be a written exam at the end of the semester that covers all topics discussed in the lectures.
Practicals
Students will work in groups of 2. The practicals consist of assignments with separate submission dates. Assignments will guide students through the design, development and verification of secure digital systems. They will cover both ASIC and FPGA-based hardware design. Submissions will be graded during a final review meeting at the end of the semester.
